Trying to Call 1998: The Evolution of “Smart” Water Softeners
Posted by Janice Macdonald on
After almost 30 years in the water business, Ontario Soft Water has seen a lot.
A long time ago—back when we still had landlines—someone decided it would be a great idea to make a water softener that plugged into a phone jack.
Yes, really.
The idea was “advanced technology.” The unit could (in theory) communicate, report issues, maybe even impress your neighbors. In reality, it mostly raised questions like:
- “Why is my softener making dialing noises?”
- “Do I need to unplug it to use the phone?”
- “Did my teenager disconnect the water system to call his girlfriend?”
Needless to say… that feature didn’t exactly take over the industry.
Fast forward to today, and we’re seeing a similar trend again—this time with WiFi-connected “smart” water softeners. Now you can track usage, get notifications, and monitor your system from your cell phone.
Sounds impressive.
But here’s the truth: most homeowners don’t need any of that.
What people actually want is simple:
- Soft water
- A reliable system
- Low maintenance
- Something that works quietly in the background
The more “features” you add, the more there is to go wrong. And when something does go wrong, it usually leads to a longer explanation, not a better result.
That’s why we still recommend systems that are:
- properly sized for your home
- efficient
- durable
- and easy to live with
No apps required.
Technology has come a long way—but sometimes, the best solution is still the simplest one.
And somewhere out there, there’s probably an old water softener in a basement, still plugged into a phone jack…
